Unclaimed Property is any financial asset that has been left inactive by the owner for over three years. This can happen when unexpected refunds or credits are applied to accounts which have closed.
Many people are unaware they have unclaimed property. Life changes, such as moving and leaving no forwarding address, a name change or when people who had joint accounts divorce or separate. Most people never receive notices that these funds exist because they have moved or the notices get lost in the mail.
When an owner cannot be located by the holder of the unclaimed property, the holder of these assets sends this money to the State where the owner had the account. The State holds these funds until the owner claims it.
